A36 steel plate is a low carbon steel with good strength and formability, and it is easy to machine and fabricate and can be securely welded. A36 is a common Carbon structural steel plate that can be galvanized to provide increased corrosion resistance. A36 steel plate can be used for a wide range of applications, depending on the thickness and corrosion resistance of the alloy, such as building, including prefabricated buildings, warehouses, industrial and commercial structures, cabinets, enclosures and housing, and pipe and tubing.
ASTM standard A36 and Chinese standard Q235 are named by the yield strength of the material.
A36 steel plate can be also replaced by A283C, SS400, SM400A, S235JR, St37-2, FE360B, E24-2. They have same material, but they use different standard to express.
Furthermore, ASTM A36 steel plate consists of C, Mn, P, S, Si and Cu, accounting for 0.25, 0.80 to 1.20, 0.04, 0.05, 0.40 and 0.2 respectively.
A36 Steel, ASTM standard steel, is Carbon structural steel plate. A36 is equivalent to Q235 in Chinese standard, but it can not be replaced by it. Because its yield strength, tensile strength and the amount of Mn in Q235 can not meet the requirements of A36.
Some different details between A36 and Q235 are following: first, the yield strength of A36 is 36Ksi (about 250Mpa) while the yield strength of Q235 is 235Mpa. Second, the tensile strength of A36 is from 400Mpa to 550Mpa while the tensile strength of Q235 is from 375Mpa to 500Mpa. Third, they have different requirements about the amount of C, Si, S and P. In A36, the amount of C is not more than 0.25%, the amount of Si is not more than 0.4%, the amount of S is not more than 0.05% and the amount of P is not more than 0.04%. While in Q235, the amount of C is from 0.12% to 0.2%, the amount of Si is not more than 0.3%, the amount of S is not more than 0.045% and the amount of P is not more than 0.045%.
